SMS opt-in process
Documentation for carrier and campaign reviewers · Last updated: August 11, 2026
Roar collects SMS consent exclusively inside the authenticated application, on the signed-in user's own Profile page. Because that page sits behind sign-in, this public page documents the complete consent experience.
How a user opts in
- The user signs in to Roar and opens Profile → Text Notifications.
- They type their own mobile number and press Save. A saved number by itself enables only one thing: one-time sign-in codes that the user requests, one at a time, at the sign-in screen.
- Account notifications require a second, separate act: ticking the “Receive texts” checkbox. The checkbox is never pre-selected — every account starts with it unchecked, and ticking it is the affirmative opt-in.
- The full disclosure appears directly beside the checkbox, at the point of consent: what the user agrees to receive and from whom, that message frequency varies, that message and data rates may apply, STOP/HELP instructions, and links to the SMS terms and privacy policy.
- Consent is not a condition of using Roar — the number field is optional and the service works fully without it.
- No message is ever sent to a number until its owner first uses it to request a sign-in code, which confirms possession of the phone.
The screenshot above is the actual opt-in interface as it appears on the signed-in Profile page at bigroar.org, in its default state: the consent checkbox starts unchecked on every account.
Assisted entry
Program staff may enter a member's number for them at the member's request. The same rules apply: the notification checkbox starts unchecked there too, nothing is texted to that number until the member personally signs in by code from it, and the member can remove the number or untick the box at any time.
How a user opts out
- Reply STOP to any message, or
- Uncheck “Receive texts” on the Profile page, or remove the number entirely.
- Reply HELP for help, or email support@bigroar.org.
Disclosures shown to users
- Message frequency varies with the user's own activity.
- Message and data rates may apply.
- Mobile information and opt-in consent are never shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
